SHOOT THE MOON

Shoot the moon

That’s all that was ever desired

that’s all that was dreamed

maybe jesus on guitar

and Buddha on the sax

James Dean on drums Elvis on bass

could approximate that

no train down the tracks

never comin’ back

been there before

whether you know it or not

It still ain’t all you got

How ‘bout that goo in your veins

to dull the pains

and hit the heights of lost flight

an aberration of numb salvation

a temporary lease to chill

an adolescent beast

no guru no wait

and the street corner flips

their coins of fate

whose schools never start

or end on time

I’ll give you yours you give me mine

the clock on the wall the hands are always

too big or too small

it don’t mean nothin’ at all

Did you ever make time 9 to 5

it’ll put you on track

man you might never get back

or chasin’ love down a

one way street

expectin’ the bright light big city

to illuminate your soul,

if it don’t blow you open

or sink you low

once is enough

and the fix is in

sooner or later

everybody looks to pass that way again

They’re growin’ and sellin’

whisperin’ and yellin’

playin’ the right note

and ridin’ on floats

pats on the back

and applause is a fact

I’d just as soon jump off a pier

or rope a wild steer

swim the riverwide or skip stones at low tide

sing like a bird and whistle absurd

to dance joy and darkness

and kick out the heartless

sooner or later

not a moment too soon

I’m gonna shoot the moon
